International Women's Day

8th March annually since 1975

This day in history...International Women's Day was recognised by the United Nations

International Women's Day (IWD) is a time to celebrate, appreciate and recognise the achievements and progress of women in social, political and economic aspects of life. It has a long history originating in the 1900s in the U.S. and has since grown to become a national holiday in some countries, including; Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. The UN drew close attention to the Women's Day by calling for an International Women's Year in 1975 and establishing the annual celebration on the 8th March - there are some discrepancies in when the day was set and who by, but for the sake of this blog we'll say it was the UN in 1975.
